PLO vs PLO-5 — What’s the Difference?

Pot-Limit Omaha (PLO)

Each player receives 4 hole cards. You must use exactly 2 hole cards and 3 community cards to form your hand.

Pot-limit betting structure — bets up to the total pot size. Stronger hands appear more frequently than in Hold’em, leading to larger pots and more intense confrontations.

PLO-5 Five Card Omaha

Each player receives 5 hole cards instead of 4 — creating 331,682 possible starting hand combinations versus 16,423 in standard PLO.

Same basic rules as PLO but the extra card dramatically increases drawing potential and hand complexity. Stronger hands appear even more frequently, making postflop play highly dynamic.

Key Strategy Tips for PLO & PLO-5

Both variants reward deep understanding of hand strength, position, and pot odds. A few principles that apply to both:

  • You must use exactly 2 hole cards — never forget this rule when reading the board.
  • Hand strength is higher on average than in Hold’em — draws and made hands clash frequently.
  • Bankroll management is critical — variance is significantly higher than in Texas Hold’em.
  • Position and board texture analysis are essential for accurate pot-odds calculations.
  • In PLO-5, starting hand selection is more complex — having connected, double-suited hands gains extra value.
