What is PLO-5?

PLO-5, or Five Card Omaha, is a pot-limit Omaha variant where each player receives five hole cards at the start of the hand. Like in standard PLO-4, players must use exactly two cards from their hand and exactly three cards from the board to make the best five-card hand.

The extra hole card dramatically increases hand equity, average hand strength, and pot sizes — making PLO-5 one of the most action-heavy formats in online poker.

⚡ Key Difference vs PLO-4

  • PLO-4: 4 hole cards → 6 possible two-card combinations per player
  • PLO-5: 5 hole cards → 10 possible two-card combinations per player
  • More combinations = stronger average hand at showdown
  • Higher equity for draws = bigger pots and more all-ins

PLO-5 vs PLO-4 — Side by Side

PLO-4 (Standard Omaha)

  • 4 hole cards dealt
  • 6 two-card combinations
  • Standard pot sizes
  • Suited aces and double-suited hands dominate
  • Easier to fold marginal hands

PLO-5 (Five Card Omaha)

  • 5 hole cards dealt
  • 10 two-card combinations
  • Larger pots, more all-ins
  • Blockers become more important
  • Nut draws and nut hands dominate even more

How to Play PLO-5 — The Rules

The Golden Rule

You must use exactly 2 cards from your hand and exactly 3 cards from the board. This is mandatory — not optional. Unlike Texas Hold’em, you cannot play the board or use fewer than two hole cards.

Positions

Dealer Button (BTN)

Acts last postflop. Best position at the table.

Small Blind (SB)

Posts half the big blind. Acts second preflop, first postflop.

Big Blind (BB)

Posts the full big blind. Acts last preflop, first postflop.

UTG / MP / CO

Earlier positions. Must act before button — significant disadvantage.

Betting Rounds

Preflop

Each player receives 5 hole cards. SB and BB post their blinds. Action starts left of BB. Players can call, raise (pot-limit), or fold.

Flop

Three community cards dealt face-up. First postflop betting round. Action starts left of dealer button.

Turn

Fourth community card. Betting round continues — pot sizes increase significantly in PLO-5 due to stronger made hands and draws.

River

Fifth and final community card. Last betting round. Showdown if more than one player remains.

Pot-Limit Betting

In PLO-5, the maximum bet at any point is the current size of the pot. This is different from No-Limit where you can go all-in at any time. Maximum raise = size of the pot after calling.

💡 Pot-Limit Formula

Max raise = (pot before your call) + (your call amount) × 2. Example: pot is $10, bet is $5 → you can raise to $25 maximum.

Hand Rankings (Same as all poker variants)

1

Royal Flush

A K Q J 10 of same suit

2

Straight Flush

Five consecutive cards, same suit

3

Four of a Kind

Four cards of same rank

4

Full House

Three of a kind + a pair

5

Flush

Five cards of same suit

6

Straight

Five consecutive cards

7

Three of a Kind

Three cards of same rank

8

Two Pair

9

10

High Card

💡 Important: Stronger hands at showdown

Because PLO-5 players have 10 two-card combinations to work with, average showdown hands are significantly stronger than in PLO-4 or Hold’em. Top two pair is often not enough — expect to see more flushes, straights, and full houses at showdown.

PLO-5 Strategy Tips

Starting Hand Selection

With 5 cards, it’s tempting to play every hand — but starting hand quality still matters greatly. The best PLO-5 hands are those with:

  • High connectivity across all 5 cards (can make multiple straights)
  • Double or triple suit coverage (flush potential from multiple directions)
  • High cards with nut potential — hands containing an ace are valuable
  • Rundowns: consecutive or near-consecutive cards like A-K-Q-J-T or 8-7-6-5-4

Blockers Matter More

With 10 two-card combinations per hand, having blockers to the nuts — cards that prevent opponents from holding the best possible hand — becomes a powerful weapon for bluffing and calling decisions.

Nut Draws vs Weak Draws

Always pursue nut draws. A non-nut flush or non-nut straight in PLO-5 can be extremely costly because opponents are more likely to hold a better version of the same draw. If you’re drawing to second-best, fold to pressure.

Pot Control

Because pots escalate quickly in PLO-5, position and pot control are critical. Avoid bloating the pot out of position with marginal hands, even strong-looking ones like top set on a connected board.

💡 Key Principle

In PLO-5, the nuts change more frequently on each street than in PLO-4. Always re-evaluate the best possible hand on every new card and ask: can I be drawing dead?

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between PLO-4 and PLO-5?

PLO-4 deals 4 hole cards (6 two-card combinations), while PLO-5 deals 5 hole cards (10 two-card combinations). PLO-5 produces stronger average hands, bigger pots, and more action.

Do I have to use exactly two hole cards in PLO-5?

Yes. In all Omaha variants including PLO-5, you must use exactly 2 cards from your hand and exactly 3 from the board — no more, no less. This is the defining rule of Omaha.

Is PLO-5 harder than PLO-4?

PLO-5 has a higher skill ceiling in terms of hand reading and blocker play, but the basic rules are the same. The extra card increases variance and average hand strength at showdown.
